Marketing Automation for Solopreneurs
Two things get called "marketing automation" and they aren't the same. One runs sequences and behavioral triggers inside your email tool. The other moves data between apps. Most solopreneurs need the first. Adding the second too early is how you end up paying for plumbing you don't have water for.
The two layers, plainly
Email-platform automation happens inside one tool: someone signs up, gets a welcome series, opens email three, gets tagged, gets a follow-up. The data and the action live in the same place. Workflow automation (Make, Zapier, n8n) is the wiring between tools: a Stripe payment lands a row in a sheet and adds the buyer to a different list. Pick the email layer first. Wire the workflow layer when something specific needs to be wired.

Common questions
Do I need a workflow tool at all? Probably not at first. Modern email platforms have native integrations for Stripe, Shopify, WooCommerce, Calendly, and the common form tools. Add Make or Zapier when a tool you use isn't natively integrated, or when you're moving data between two non-email tools.
Make or Zapier? Zapier ships your first flow in 20 minutes. Make costs roughly one-tenth as much at scale. Start on Zapier if you need one or two automations now. Move to Make once you're running five or more flows.
When does automation pay off? When the manual version takes more than 30 minutes a week and you have a process that already works manually. Build by hand for two weeks first. Automating a broken process just breaks it faster.
